The union was founded in August 1982 by six (6) visionary leaders namely late Frederick Elvery Daniels, Hardy Frimpong, Robert Aikins, Samuel Owusu Berkoe, Florence Ofori Darko, Mary Torgbor, Mary Yeboah and Cosmos Awortwi with the mission to provide financial services, including savings and loans, to the economically active poor residing and working in the Tema Metropolis, whose financial needs are unmet by formal banks and other financial institutions.

Since its inception, the union has made major steps in delivering quality financial services to its members in the Tema Metropolis. The union’s core duty and responsibility is to mobilize and protect the savings of its members and at the same time grant affordable loans to them.

As a community-based credit union, NTCCU has grown steadily to become one of the leading Credit Unions in Ghana. Considering its current membership and asset base the union is categorized as a large credit union within the credit union fraternity in Ghana.
